Galle Clock Tower

Galle is the capital of southern Sri Lanka. In 1587, the Portuguese took over the City of  Galle from its Sinhalese kings and built its first fortress, which still stands today reminiscent of the Portuguese, Dutch and British invasions. Its old world charm still appeals as a tourist destination. The influence of the Dutch & the Portuguese is evident in the architecture of the City. The town was the first international commerce and trade center of the island, even today Galle plays an important role in the Sri Lanka’s economy. Galle remains a fortified City built by Europeans in Southern Asia.

Thousands of pilgrims throng to this place of worship every month  to offer poojas. During the Colonial period it is written that the Dutch landed in unawatuna in 1640.
